As the federal government retreats from climate action under President Donald Trump , efforts to cut carbon emissions and advance the clean energy transition at the state and corporate levels become more important.

Electric utility companies are also facing the challenge of decarbonizing while adding more power capacity as the demand for electricity surges due to the electrification of more appliances and vehicles and the AI-driven boom in data centers .

California's power system is on the cutting edge of those changes while also lying squarely in the path of climate-driven impacts.
