JERUSALEM — A shooting at a bus stop in northern Jerusalem on Monday resulted in the deaths of six people and left 12 others injured, according to Israeli police and emergency services. The attack occurred during the busy morning rush hour at a major intersection that leads to Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem.
Witnesses reported that the attackers opened fire on individuals waiting at the bus stop. An Israeli soldier and a civilian present at the scene responded by shooting and killing the assailants. Footage from the incident showed chaos as people fled the area, with a bus at the stop displaying a shattered windshield and personal belongings scattered across the street.
Emergency responders described the scene as chaotic, with broken glass littering the ground and several victims lying unconscious on the road and sidewalk. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at the site approximately two hours after the shooting. He had been scheduled to attend a court hearing related to his ongoing corruption trial, which was postponed due to the security situation.
Netanyahu stated that Israel is “fighting a war on multiple fronts,” which includes conflicts in Gaza, the West Bank, and within Israel itself. He commended the soldier who neutralized the attacker, noting that he was part of a newly-formed unit for ultra-Orthodox soldiers.
In response to the attack, hundreds of security personnel were deployed to the area to search for any additional attackers or explosives. The Israeli military announced it is encircling Palestinian villages near Ramallah as part of heightened security measures.
Hamas praised the attack, referring to it as a “natural response to the occupation’s crimes against our people,” although they did not claim direct responsibility. This incident marks the deadliest attack since a mass shooting in October 2024, when two Palestinians opened fire on a light rail train in Tel Aviv, killing seven people.
According to data from the U.N. humanitarian office, at least 49 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians in Israel or the West Bank since the onset of the current conflict, which began in July 2025. During the same timeframe, Israeli forces and civilians have killed at least 968 Palestinians in the region.
