Nationwide has promised a big change is coming for app users "soon". The building society, which is the world's largest mutual, spoke out on X, formerly Twitter, after a customer asked if the dark background in the app is optional.

They commented it was "too dark for my eyes", with Nationwide replying: "If your device settings are enabled for dark mode, the banking app will also be in dark mode for the moment."

Nationwide told the customer: "A further update is coming soon to add an option to the banking app menu which will then enable it to be toggled on and off independently of the device setting."
