Syracuse, N.Y. --Syracuse football coach Fran Brown’s message-setting postgame sprints were skewered by a handful of former NFL players and coaches on Monday, two days after the SU coach publicly disciplined his team following a 27-20 overtime win over UConn.
Brown’s unique approach to enforcing his standards were criticized on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show by both McAfee and former NFL (and UConn) defensive back Darius Butler, as well as on FS1’s Wake Up Barstool by former NFL coach Jon Gruden and NFL tight end Greg Olsen.
The biggest critique from the football veterans was that the sprints were performative, a display that was meant to be a message to fans and to say more about Brown’s approach to coaching than to actually be impactful on SU’s players.
