The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) is warning the public about a telephone scam in which callers falsely claim to be police officers.

Police say their Communications Centre has received numerous reports of people across several provinces being contacted by scammers using the WPS non-emergency number, 204-986-6222. The calls appear to come from the legitimate line, but police stress the number is being spoofed.

“The public should be aware that law enforcement agencies will never call you and request personal information or funds,” the WPS said in a statement.

Authorities are reminding people not to provide information about bank accounts, identification numbers, credit cards, or other personal finances to anyone over the phone.
