AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A follow-up out of Amherst, multiple people are now without a home after a porch fire on Olympia Drive this past weekend. That fire may have been caused by a common item you might even have in your home.

While investigators have not yet figured out a cause to Saturday’s fire, officials said the most likely factor right now is a failed lithium-ion battery pack from an e-bike. In Massachusetts last year, fire officials say there were at least 135 lithium-ion battery fires. In addition, about three dozen injuries to firefighters and civilians caused by these batteries have been reported since late 2023, devices like e-bikes and scooters being the most involved equipment.
