AUBURN, Ala. — A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a retired Auburn University professor, whose body was found in a dog park. Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, a 59-year-old veterinarian, was discovered in a wooded area of Kiesel Park on Saturday, according to Auburn police. Authorities stated that she died from an assault.

Harold Rashad Dabney III, 28, of Montgomery, Alabama, was taken into custody on Sunday. He faces two counts of capital murder. Police also allege that Dabney stole Schnuelle's car, which has since been recovered. He is currently being held without bond.

The Lee County District Attorney's office has not provided further details about the case. Auburn University expressed deep sorrow over Schnuelle's death, describing her as a "beloved" faculty member in the Department of Clinical Sciences, where she worked from 2003 until 2021.

An Auburn spokesperson remarked, "She was a cherished educator, mentor, and colleague whose dedication to students and passion for theriogenology and veterinary medicine left a lasting impact on Auburn. Dr. Gard Schnuelle’s legacy of compassion, scholarship, and service will continue to inspire generations of veterinarians."

Tommy Tuberville, a senator from Alabama and former Auburn football coach, shared his condolences on social media. He wrote, "Suzanne and I are devastated by the news of this tragic loss in our community. We are praying for the victim’s family and loved ones and for justice to be served."

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to gather more information.
