Six years ago, an aspiring computer scientist working on a doctorate from LSU was shot and killed while moonlighting as a convenience store clerk at a Baton Rouge gas station.

Authorities say Antonio Watts confessed to storming into the Mr. Lucky’s Valero gas station along Airline Highway early the morning of Sept. 7, 2019, shooting Mohammed Firoz-Ul-Amin and stepping over his body to steal money from the cash register.

Watts, 28, has shuffled between jails and mental health facilities over the past six years. But a Baton Rouge judge recently brought the case to an end and sentenced him to 40 years in prison.

District Judge Brad Myers imposed the prison time Friday morning after Watts pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other charges inside the 19th Judicial District Courthouse. Watts
