Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), a senior member of the Senate Banking Committee and a critical swing vote, says he’s going to support President Trump’s nomination of Stephen Miran to serve on the Federal Reserve’s board of governors for six months, despite questions about Miran’s ability to separate himself from Trump’s inner circle.

Tillis says it’s critical that the Federal Reserve maintain its political independence from the White House but he said he would support Miran, the head of Trump's Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), because he would serve on the Fed for a short time.

“With his intent to potentially go back to the [CEA,] I don’t think he’d be appropriate for a long-term role but I’ll support him for the short term,” Tillis said.
