PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A recovery effort was underway Tuesday morning after a disturbing discovery near a popular hiking trail on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called out to the Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain , where they found a man’s body off the trail. Firefighters believe the man fell and landed in a gully.

A park ranger was the first to find the body and call for help. It’s unclear how long the body was there.

The man’s name has not been released. Police said they’re still working on getting in touch with his family to tell them what happened.

Recovery crews waited for the weather to cool before they could get to the body but later said it was too dark. It’s also really steep in that area, which made the operation more difficult.
