A woman has died after being airlifted to shore following an incident involving a small boat off the coast of Dover.

Coastguard, lifeboat and Border Force crews responded to the emergency shortly after 1pm today.

A police spokesman says it was “made aware by the coastguard of an incident in the Channel involving a small boat”.

“One woman was airlifted back to shore where she was pronounced deceased,” police said.

“Officers are conducting inquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

A coastguard spokesperson says Border Force vessels, RNLI lifeboats and HM Coastguard aircraft were involved in the rescue operation.

A government spokesperson says Border Force responded to reports of a “migrant boat in distress”.
