SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) - The Smith County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a Jesus statue was vandalized at an East Texas church.
On Sunday, September 7, 2025, around 8:45 am, Smith County authorities responded to St. Mary Magdalene Church regarding a report of criminal mischief.
Authorities observed that a marble statue of Jesus located at the front of the church had been vandalized.
SCSO says an unknown suspect had vandalized the face and both hands of the statue.
Surveillance footage was obtained from the church, which pinpointed a time of 1:14 am, showing a white male wearing a black shirt and black shorts walking up to the statue.
The video shows the suspect using an object (possibly a hammer) to shatter the hands, wrists, and part of the face of the statue.
