KFC founder used to run rival fried chicken business and people are gobsmacked

KFC enthusiasts have a finger-licking good reason to celebrate today (September 9), marking the 135th birthday of its esteemed founder, Colonel Harland Sanders. The restaurateur launched his fried chicken empire in 1930 as a roadside diner, but it wasn't until 1952 that the first KFC-branded franchise opened its doors in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In just a decade, the brand had become a powerhouse, boasting over 600 branches across the US. The UK got its first taste of the good life in 1965 when the inaugural KFC branch opened in Preston, Lancashire – and it recently celebrated its 60th anniversary with a tempting free food giveaway.
