For the second time in a decade, a team drafted a kicker on Day 2 and cut him before the end of his rookie contract.
On Tuesday, multiple reports indicated that the San Francisco 49ers were waiving placekicker and former third-round pick Jake Moody after two years and one game with the team. He joins former Tampa Bay Buccaneers second-round pick Roberto Aguayo on the ignominious list of recent Day 2 kickers that didn't work out.
The 49ers' decision comes on the heels of a rough Week 1 outing for Moody, who doinked the left upright on a 27-yard field goal attempt and had a 36-yard attempt blocked in Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Sunday was the continuation of what had been a rough stretch for Moody, who missed nine of his final 20 attempts during the 2024 regular season following his return from a high ankle sprain.
San Francisco brought in veteran kicker Greg Joseph in the offseason to compete with Moody for the kicking job in training camp, though San Francisco cut Joseph after about two weeks of summer practice.
The 49ers originally drafted Moody with the No. 99 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He led the league in extra point attempts (61) and makes (60) as a rookie, but his field goal percentage declined from 84% as a rookie to 70.6% last year.
Sunday's 1-for-3 outing showed more signs of a downward trend and was ultimately the final straw for San Francisco.
The 49ers won their Week 1 matchup against Seattle, 17-13, but they'll need to find a new kicker to take over ahead of their Week 2 clash with the Saints in New Orleans.
