GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Consumers Energy will sell their 13 hydroelectric dams to Confluence Hydro, the company announced Tuesday, claiming it will save customers money long-term and ensure dam safety.

Currently, Consumers Energy owns hydroelectric dams along the Muskegon, Manistee, Grand, Kalamazoo and Au Sable rivers.

The sale comes as Consumers Energy has long considered what to do with the dams: Sell them, decommission them or keep them within the company.
