Habitat for Humanity’s historic housing project on the site of Belleville’s former police station is now underway.

Habitat is about to demolish the building at Dundas Street East and South George Street to make room for 66 affordable, condominium-style apartments.

Staff of the charity joined local dignitaries on Tuesday morning at the site for a ceremony marking the official start of the demolition process.

Lead by Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings, it’s “the largest single-phase Habitat build in Canadian history,” said Karen Coviello, Habitat for Humanity Canada’s senior vice-president of people and impact.
