LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two Metro Councilmembers have proposed changing a city ordinance to make it easier for lost pets to be reunited with their owners.

Councilwoman Donna Purvis (District 5) and Councilman Andrew Owen (District 8) filed an amendment to the current animal ordinance on Monday. The change would require pet owners to microchip their dogs and cats.

Microchips are tiny devices placed under a pet’s skin that help shelters, and veterinary clinics identify pets and contact their owners, the councilmembers said.

The amendments would also offer a lifetime pet license for a one-time fee of $25 for dogs and cats that are spayed and neutered, microchipped, and have up-to-date rabies vaccinations. The annual fee for an unaltered pet license is $120.
