CHARLESTON — Another Republican is jumping into the crowded GOP race to succeed U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace in Congress, casting himself as a bow tie-wearing problem-solver who will champion President Donald Trump’s agenda.

Dr. Sam McCown, 57, announced he will run for Congress in South Carolina’s coastal 1st District in a launch video released Sept. 9.

“When I look at America today, I see a country with deep underlying problems that career politicians either can't see or won't fix,” he says in the recording.

One of the problems cited by McCown is a familiar refrain to voters along South Carolina’s southeastern coast who for years were represented by GOP deficit hawk Mark Sanford .
