ROCHESTER, Minn. --The University of Minnesota Rochester is seeing record enrollment, surpassing 1,000 students and straining existing facilities as it continues to grow.

Chancellor Lori Carrell called the increase a “great problem to have,” citing UMR’s focus on health sciences, strong academic support, and community engagement as key drivers of interest.

“The quality of education we offer is exceptional,” Carrell said. “It’s personalized, research-informed, and deeply connected to the community.”

While housing is currently sufficient, the university is beginning to feel pressure on classroom space. UMR plans to expand its facilities, prioritizing flexible, active-learning classrooms. Carrell said details may be announced at the university’s State of the Campus event Nov. 11.
