The cost to fix the Owen Sound rec centre’s leaky roof has soared by nearly 40 per cent since the contract to fix it was awarded in May.

Discovery of additional damaged roof sections from leaks, which have plagued the building since it opened, necessitated additional removal of insulation and roof material, said Bradey Carbert, in an interview Tuesday, after appearing before council Monday night.

Council voted to accept his recommendation and approve a budget increase for this work from $920,950 to $1,270,950 — a 38 per cent increase. Compared with the initial consultant’s estimate of $850,000 around 2022, costs have risen by nearly 50 per cent.
