Woman charged with murder 32 years after newborn found in Iowa landfill

A woman has been arrested for first-degree murder nearly 33 years after police found a baby at the Iowa City landfill.

Police discovered the baby, then known as Baby John Doe, at the landfill on Dec. 21, 1992.

The initial autopsy revealed that Doe was a "full-term, well-developed white male" child. The baby had suffered "extensive blunt force injuries" after death. A cause of death was never declared.

Police said the baby came from trash cans that were picked up by a garbage truck near 712 5th Street in Coralville, which were emptied at the landfill. Investigators could not identify the child's mother or father at the time.

Now, nearly 33 years later thanks to advances in DNA technology, the baby's alleged mother, Cindy Sue Elder, now 58 living in Missouri, is accused of killing her ne
