MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s lack of backfield depth was well-documented throughout preseason camp.

The Mountaineers increased it just before the start of the regular season when running back Tye Edwards gained an additional year of eligibility through a lawsuit.

Yet it was apparent the Mountaineers felt they needed more, and in August, they brought in Andre Devine, the son of offensive analyst and assistant running backs coach Noel Devine, himself a former star tailback at WVU.

That gave West Virginia eight running backs. Seven were in uniform for the opener August 30 against Robert Morris, all but Kannon Katzer, a Ferris State transfer who was out injured.
