California has officially put sweepstakes casinos on notice. On Sept. 8, the state Senate voted unanimously to advance Bill AB 831 , a proposal that would outlaw sweeps gaming entirely. California doesn’t allow for legal online casinos , which has made it a hot bed for sweepstakes casino gaming.

Why a California sweepstakes casino ban is likely

The bill isn’t law yet. It still needs approval from the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee and a full floor vote.

But with zero dissent so far (36 ayes, no nays in the Senate), and Democrats holding a veto-proof supermajority, the chances of passing are guaranteed.

If it reaches Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk, few expect him to block it. In other words, the industry’s last hope in California is fading quickly.
