HANCOCK, Maine (WABI) - A skill humanity has forged for millennia now continues to the next generation.
Michael Whitmore says he began blacksmithing at the age of 10. He has been mastering the craft ever since at True Serendipity Homestead , a Hancock property that has been in his family since approximately 1940.
Passing the torch, or hot iron, of metalwork was what inspired Whitmore to begin his blacksmithing classes.
“When I was 10 years old, I still remember the sights and smells, the sounds of the tools, and all that,” recalls Whitmore. “And that’s what I want to show these children. I want to give them something to dream.”
On Tuesday, the Hancock homestead was visited by Independent Downeast Educational Alliance (IDEA), a group that organizes field trips for homeschool families.
