ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) - California (PA) golf junior and Struthers graduate Chaz Ekoniak registered a first-place individual finish at the Wheeling Invitational at Belmont Hills Country Club over the weekend.
The Struthers High School record-holder fired an eight-under 134 (66-68) during the two-day event that included 11 birdies. It was Ekoniak's first top finish overall after besting 85 golfers.
According to the school, he became the first Cal golfer in over 15 years to record a 36-hole score lower than 140 after entering the year with a collegiate-best total of 147 over two rounds.
His individual title helped lead the Vulcans to a team tournament victory over 11 different programs during the first outing of the season.
