A pedestrian was killed Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle in Newark, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Shawnita Ferguson, 51, of Newark, was struck by a westbound car at about 6:30 p.m. while crossing the street at 398 Springfield Avenue behind a parked NJ Transit bus, officials said.

Ferguson was pronounced dead at the scene, the prosecutor’s office said.

The driver and passenger were not injured. They called the police to report the incident and remained at the scene, officials said.

The investigation remains ongoing, authorities said.
