RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Mayo Island Park is now protected by a conservation easement, meaning you will never see any big buildings on the 14.5-acre plot and can expect more green space moving forward.
The site is now a part of the James River Park System, something Mayor Danny Avula and Governor Glenn Youngkin call a major milestone.
This means that the days of asphalt and parking lots on the site are over, and the city can now begin beautifying the space.
The city purchased 14 acres of Mayo Island in January 2024 and has been planning to make it a park for people to enjoy ever since.
Now that it is in the park system’s hands, that goal will become a bit easier, as it allows more money to come into the project from state funding.
