Terminating the lease for the Fraser Downs Racetrack is an absolute tragedy.
Those people had two weeks notice as they were preparing to start again in September. It isn't just the workers themselves. They have to organize something for their horses. At the very least, they should have been allowed to continue until the end of the race season.
Mayor Brenda Locke said, "Before shovels hit the ground, we must complete master planning, public consultation, environmental review, detailed design permits, and procurements." Surely this takes a long time, lots of money, and they could have stayed open until the spring.
Their work is very specialized. Hastings Park may be finished next May as well, so I'm sure they aren't hiring. This is a very select group who devote their lives to wo
