LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -The Village of Elsie is trying to climb out of a financial deficit, as a former employee is accused of embezzlement.

Because the village is in the red, it had to cut back on expenses. The volunteer fire department is one of them.

The investigation into the former employee accused of embezzlement and the status of the volunteer fire department were two main topics of concern at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

“All the budgets and everything that was presented in the past were all false. We were actually presented a budget that was actually an extreme amount of surplus that fell flat,” said Council President Jason Freeman.

The room was so packed, they had to move into the library to fit everyone.
