MCDONOUGH COUNTY, Ill. (WGEM) - McDonough County Sheriff Nick Petitgout said he is “99.9% certain” that Eric M. Warren-Spears was the person who shot and killed 23-year-old Cheyenna Decker.

In May, Petitgout confirmed to WGEM News that Spears was a suspect in the case. However, on Saturday, May 24, Spears took his own life.

On Tuesday morning, Petitgout told WGEM News the details that led investigators to this point.

Spears lived in the same apartment complex as Decker, and had a unit that overlooked the entire complex. Petitgout believes the motive was stalking.

Spears could see everyone come and go.

Law enforcement responded to Decker’s apartment on N. Coal Street on Jan. 21 and found her lifeless. Petitgout said she sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.
