CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Butch Vig likes to describe Garbage as “a dysfunctional family” -- albeit one that’s actually been highly functional during the past three decades.
Formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisc. by Vig and longtime musical friends Duke Erikson and Steve Marker and British singer Shirley Manson, Garbage has released eight studio albums since its 2025 debut. It’s sold more than 17 million records worldwide, with nine Billboard Alternative Rock hits such as “Stupid Girl,” “Push It,” “Only Happy When It Rains” and “#1 Crush” from the “Romeo + Juliet” film soundtrack in 1997. It also won an MTV Video Music Award for “Special” in 1999.
