COLDWATER, MI — The Coldwater City Council Monday, Sept. 8 unanimously overturned a two-year policy banning child safety signs in residential neighborhoods.

Two years ago, the city stopped erecting and began removing child safety signs, based on a 2007 study that reported the signs were ineffective.

On Aug. 25, Jane Nastally and Katy Jewell urged the city to reinstate the policy to protect children with autism after the council denied a request for a sign on July 28.

After Councilman Travis Machan asked why the state would continue to put up deer crossing signs if safety warning signs were ineffective.

The council asked staff to review the issue, prompting City Manager Keith Baker to propose a new policy with strict guidelines.
