Sissonville football coach Mike Hughes was all smiles as he emerged from the locker room following the Indians' 20-19 win over Tolsia on Thursday night.

It had been 1,035 days since Sissonville had last won -- a 52-37 victory over Westside, also at Joe Sawyers Field, on Nov. 4, 2022. That skid ended with Thursday’s win and victory No. 1 in the 27-year-old Hughes’ career.

“I can’t even put words to it,” Hughes said after the game outside the Sissonville locker room. “I’m proud of these kids, man. They worked. They worked.”

Hughes said he didn’t want to think about the 21-game losing streak that had started with a loss in the first game of the 2023 season and continued each week through the 2025 season opener – a 48-41 loss at Sherman.

The goal, Hughes said, was to go 1-0 each week.
