Summertime is well and truly over according to the UK-wide weather forecast , with heavy rain and strong winds ahead this weekend.

The outlook for the next few days has prompted speculation that the first named storm of the season could arrive shortly - and the Met Office has weighed in.

Back in June, the UK weather service invited the public to suggest potential names for the 2025 to 2026 storm season. The call-out resulted in thousands of people putting forward names of their pets, loved ones or even favourite film and TV characters.

The first name on this year's roster has been unveiled as Amy - the top female name submitted to the Met Office.
