FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A Fairfax County man is in jail after calling 911 to report his girlfriend wasn't breathing. She died six days later.

Robert Lee Howald, 35, called police around 5 a.m. Aug. 30 and told them his girlfriend Ana Maria Mena Membreno, 28, wasn't breathing and he was giving her CPR. When police arrived, though, they found evidence that she had been assaulted and arrested Howald.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to the home on the 6600 block of Jefferson Avenue in Woodley North to bring the woman to a nearby hospital in life-threatening condition.

Howald is facing strangulation and malicious wounding charges. He was brought to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and is being held on no bond.
