CLEVELAND — A Virginia woman will spend the next 22 1/2 in federal prison for the 2021 killing of a man at Cuyahoga Valley National Park .

Chelsea Perkins, 35, admitted back in May to fatally shooting Matthew Dunmire at the Terra Vista Natural Study Area in Valley View. She pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and using or carrying and discharging a firearm during, and in relation to, a crime of violence on federal property.

Since the murder took place at a national park, the federal courts took charge of Perkins' case. Her plea agreement asked U.S. District Senior Judge Solomon Oliver Jr. to sentence her to anywhere between 20 and 25 years behind bars.
