ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 911 call reporting a suspicious person in the yard of a South St. Augustine home led to a deadly deputy-involved shooting Wednesday morning, according to News 6 partner WJXT.

St. Johns County deputies responded to a home near 1st Street and Brainard Drive, about half a mile east of U.S. 1 near Moultrie Creek, around 5:30 a.m.

Director Howard “Skip” Cole, who runs the county’s Criminal Investigations Division, said a woman called 911 after seeing a suspicious man in her backyard. When deputies arrived about 10 minutes later, they found a 45-year-old man in front of the caller’s home holding a handgun.

The man died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. No deputies were injured.
