FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Flagler Beach is considering new restrictions on where people can fish along the beach. The city says the current mix of fishermen, swimmers and surfers creates safety concerns.

But local fishing groups are pushing back against the proposed ordinance.

“Most anglers want to be on the beach early, catch their fish, go home. They don’t want to deal with the swimmers,” said Mike Vickers Jr., president of the Flagler County Sport Fishing Club.

Local anglers have already started a petition opposing the proposed surf fishing ordinance. The ordinance would ban fishing in certain beach areas.

Many fishermen prefer time restrictions or clearer guidance instead of a full ban.
