WASHINGTON — Actor James McAvoy was punched by a stranger in a Toronto bar this week while in town for the premiere of his directorial debut, "California Schemin’," according to People .

The "X-Men" and "Split" star , 46, was at a bar named Charlotte’s Room late Monday night when a man he did not know struck him around 11:55 p.m., People reported. McAvoy tried to calm the situation before others stepped in to remove the man.

“James was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out. James’ back was to him and the man just punched him,” a source close to McAvoy told People.
