SAINT PAUL, Minn — Dozens of people were assessed for injuries after a Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam hit severe turbulence on July 30. In a release Wednesday, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) shared what happened on the flight.

The flight encountered severe turbulence for about 2.5 minutes at about 37,000 feet in the air near Creston, Wyoming. The NTSB reported that the captain had turned off the seatbelt sign when the airplane's autopilot turned off, resulting in a rapid climb and descent cycle.

The flight crew diverted to MSP Airport after realizing people were injured.

While in the air, a passenger who was a physician assistant helped the crew address any injuries.
