During a recent broadcast, Buck Martinez, a broadcaster for the Toronto Blue Jays, expressed strong criticism of the New York Yankees. As the Blue Jays were staging a comeback against the Houston Astros, Martinez did not hold back his thoughts on the Yankees' performance.
"You know, the Yankees, they’re not a good team. I don’t care what their record is," Martinez said while in the booth with play-by-play announcer Dan Shulman at Rogers Centre. He pointed out several issues with the Yankees, stating, "They have a lot of wild pitches, they make a lot of mistakes in the field, they don’t run the bases very well. If they don’t hit home runs, they don’t have a chance to win."
Martinez's comments come in the wake of a previous jab from Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay, who had criticized the Blue Jays earlier in the season. Last July, Kay remarked that the Blue Jays were "not playing great baseball" and were "not a first-place team," despite the Yankees having a significantly better run differential at that time. This sparked a back-and-forth between fans of both teams.
After the Blue Jays completed a four-game sweep of the Yankees, Jamie Campbell, another Sportsnet broadcaster, waved a broom on the post-game show, referencing Kay's earlier comments. He stated, "I can think of a certain Yankee broadcaster, in fact, who is gonna have to go on his show tomorrow and admit that the Blue Jays are a first-place team, because the standings prove it."
In response, Kay defended his position, saying, "What I would say to Jamie is I can easily say the Blue Jays are a first-place team because I’m not a fawning fanboy. I’m a broadcaster. Imagine if (YES Network studio analyst) Jack Curry was waving a broom on the Yankees post-game show, he would probably be called into the office and shortly fired after that."
The rivalry continued on social media, where Campbell tweeted, "I should point out that I have always had great respect for Mr. Kay. That’s a tough market, and he’s endured. We haven’t been able to say 'first place' around here for a while. Just having a little fun!"
As of now, the Blue Jays hold a record of 83-61, leading the Yankees, who are at 80-64, by three games in the American League East. Kay later clarified his earlier comments, stating he intended to compliment the Blue Jays for their performance, despite their run differential. "I think I might have said they’re not playing that great because I was looking at the numbers and I probably didn’t articulate it the way I should have," he explained.
Both teams are set to continue their seasons, with the Blue Jays resuming their series against the Astros and the Yankees looking to recover against the Detroit Tigers.
