NEW YORK (PIX11) – A new scam is taking advantage of seniors across New York state, according to Attorney General Letitia James.

Officials said the “Phantom Hacker” scam has three phases. Here’s how it works: • Phase 1: Victims get a phone call, text or pop-up window telling them their account was hacked and to contact customer support • Phase 2: Scammers tell the victims to download software, where they’ll be asked to open up their bank accounts • Phase 3: Victims are asked to wait for two calls from their bank and a federal agency, where a scammer tells them to move their money to another account

James said that since 2024, scammers have been able to steal over $1 billion from victims who were nearing retirement age. The scammers may tell victims not to tell anyone why they need
