BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A man has been arrested in connection with stabbing his mother to death on Long Island, the Suffolk County Police Department announced on Wednesday.

Jason S. Kurumoglu, 30, was charged with second-degree murder after his mother, Melida Velasquez, was found stabbed to death in their home at 55 West White Street on Tuesday, according to authorities.

An acquaintance of the family told PIX11 on scene that the 59-year-old mother was very active in her church and well-loved by fellow members.

Kurumoglu is set to be arraigned on Thursday.
