NATIONWIDE — A PHANTOM HACKER has been targeting victims at or past retirement again in a three-stage scam, State Attorney General Letitia James warned in a consumer alert issued on Wednesday, Sept. 10. According to the alert, the scammers gain access to bank and retirement accounts in three phases, each phase building on the last to create a convincing scenario for victims.

First, victims receive a text, call or email claiming that their account was hacked and they are instructed to contact a customer support phone number. Those who call the number are instructed to download a software program that allows the hackers access to their computer.
