WASHINGTON — Right-wing activist and media personality Charlie Kirk has died after he was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, with video from the campus showing crowds of students running away after a gunshot was heard.

President Donald Trump announced his death in a statement on Truth Social, writing, "The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie."

In response, Trump ordered U.S. flags lowered to half-staff until Sunday evening.

Video posted on social media showed Kirk bleeding heavily from an apparent gunshot wound near his neck.
