Duke wide receiver Andrel Anthony made a spectacular touchdown catch just before halftime against Illinois on Saturday, getting a foot down in front of the backline with almost no space while being blanketed.

It was one of several impressive plays from a group of receivers coach Jon Sumrall labeled the best he had seen in 17 games with Tulane.

The same cannot be said for the Green Wave’s unproven wideouts, almost all of whom are getting their first real opportunity as consistent pass-catchers. Their improvement as they gain experience with new quarterbacks Jake Retzlaff and Brendan Sullivan will be imperative as Tulane (2-0) hosts Duke (1-1) this Saturday (7 p.m., ESPN2).

“We’re still finding our stride,” Sumrall said. “We haven’t hit our head anywhere near the ceiling yet.”
