The early-afternoon crash that closed the northbound span of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway came only minutes after a motorist had alerted bridge police of a pickup that appeared to be driving too fast, a Causeway official said.

Causeway police began monitoring the roadway, looking out for the pickup when they heard reports of the crash at the 3.4-mile mark, which is on the Metairie side of the 24-mile span, Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said.

Four people were injured in the three-vehicle crash. Dufrechou said some of the injured people were transported to hospitals on the southshore. He didn't know the extent of the injuries but didn't think they were life threatening.

The investigation is continuing and no citations have yet been issued, he said.
