In Alpine, New Jersey — an affluent suburb of New York City — a mansion built atop blasted bedrock has now set a new benchmark in stone, closing at $17.7 million. That purchase price marks the highest residential sale in the Garden State in three years.

The 25,700-square-foot Versailles-style estate, known as Chateau de la Roche, sits on 2 acres in the gated Rio Vista enclave about a half hour from Manhattan.

The transaction, which closed Tuesday, is also Alpine’s priciest since January 2022, according to Christie’s International Real Estate Group. 8
