WASHINGTON -- The IRS is warning taxpayers about false information being spread online that is causing filers to claim credits that aren’t available to them. The agency says an ongoing surge of misinformation has led to $162 million in penalties since 2022.
The IRS says social media posts promoting the misuse of the Fuel Tax Credit and the Sick and Family Leave Credit are among its major concerns.
“These scams have led thousands of taxpayers to file inaccurate or frivolous returns, often resulting in the denial of refunds and steep penalties,” the IRS wrote.
The IRS says the posts falsely claim that all taxpayers are eligible for credits they don’t qualify for. Many of the credits are intended for use by self-employed individuals or businesses.
“These schemes are not only misleading bu
