After months of waiting and pleading for help, a family of Canadian permanent residents stuck in Gaza have been told they can leave the besieged and bombarded enclave next week.

"We hope to stay safe this week … I'm counting every minute right now," said Karim Abushbak, 21, who first spoke to The Current about his family's plight last month .

Abushbak and his family were in Gaza when Israel began its military offensive, following the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The family has been displaced several times by airstrikes and ground offensives, as humanitarian groups warn of growing famine caused by Israel's aid blockade.
